Sport climbing Olympic champion Janja Garnbret headlines a star-studded IFSC World Cup event in Kranj, Slovenia on 3-4 September.

Fresh from her thrilling victory in the combined event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - where sport climbing made its Olympic debut - the Slovenian is the heavy favourite to clinch victory on home soil.

"It was the hardest competition in my life,” she told Olympics.com after her Tokyo 2020 victory. "But I kind of kept telling myself that the pressure is just an illusion that I have to just enjoy, because if I enjoy it, then I also know that I will do my best."

While the Olympic competition included all three disciplines of speed, bouldering, and lead, the World Cup in Kranj will only feature lead, in which Garnbret is the reigning world champion.

There will also be plenty of Olympic talent on show in the men’s competition too.

Below, we take a look at the key athletes to watch out for, the event schedule, and how to stream the action live on Olympics.com.

Athletes to watch out for

The first-ever women’s sport climbing Olympic champion, Janja Garnbret, will be keen to put on a show in front of her home fans.

It would take a seismic upset to beat the Slovenian on home soil, but thanks to the presence of Austria’s Jessica Pilz, nothing is a foregone conclusion. The 24-year-old finished seventh in the Olympic final, but is the 2018 lead world champion.

Another Olympic finalist in Korea’s Chaehyun Seo will be quietly confident of making the podium, having won the 2019 lead World Cup overall title in her senior debut season. The 17-year-old is also the reigning Asian champion.

Elsewhere, keep an eye on Garnbret’s compatriot Mia Krampl, who didn’t quite make it to the Olympic final, but finished second in the lead competition at the 2019 World Championships.

In the men’s draw, Sweden’s Hannes Puman and Stefano Ghisolfi of Italy will be confident, having both finished in the top ten in lead at the 2019 World Championships.

There are high hopes too for USA’s Sean Bailey, who finished in the top 10 overall in the 2019 lead World Cup.
