India’s Sumit Nagal advanced to the main draw of the ATP 250 Sardegna Open after a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Frenchman Maxime Janvier in the second round of qualifiers on Monday in Cagliari, Italy.

The Indian tennis player had earlier beaten local player Andrea Pellegrino 6-3, 6-4 in the first qualifying round.

This was the 23-year-old Nagal’s second-straight main draw at an ATP 250 event after the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires last month.

Ranked 136th on the ATP Tour – the best of any Indian tennis player – Sumit Nagal notched his first victory at an ATP 250 event when he beat Portugal’s Joao Sousa.

He also stunned world No. 22 Cristian Garin of Chile – his first victory over a top-25 player – to reach the quarter-finals.

Sumit Nagal eventually bowed out of the Argentina Open to fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets.

He then played the ATP Challenger Zadar in Croatia, where he again lost in the last eight.

Sumit Nagal is yet to discover his first-round opponent at the Sardegna Open, where he will play a fellow qualifier.

The Indian tennis player will hope to replicate his performance from his last ATP 250 tournament in a tough field which includes Englishman Daniel Evans and Taylor Fritz of the USA.
