Divij Sharan, Sriram Balaji sail into Czech Open semi-final

The Indian pair recorded a straight sets victory over Andre Goransson and Goncalo Oliveira in the quarter-final in Prostejov.

Veteran Indian doubles players Divij Sharan and N Sriram Balaji continued their impressive Czech Open campaign on Wednesday by upstaging Andre Goransson and Goncalo Oliveira 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

The Indian duo had come into the match after getting the better of Australians Alex Bolt and Marc Polmans after being a set down in the pre-quarters in Prostejov. Their last eight match, however, was a straight-sets affair.

Divij Sharan and Sriram Balaji started on a strong note by breaking Goransson-Oliveira twice in the first three games to take a 3-0 lead early on in the match.

The Swedish-Portuguese duo, however, hit back by breaking the Indians in the fourth game.

Though the teams exchanged breaks one more time in the fifth and the eighth games, Sharan and Sriram managed to hold on to their slim lead to win the first set 6-4.

Divij Sharan and Sriram Balaji broke the Swedish-Portuguese duo in the third, fifth and the seventh games of the second set to cruise into the semis of the Czech Republic Challenger.

Divij Sharan and Sriram Balaji will face the local pair of David Poljak and Dalibor Svrcina in the Czech Open semi-final on Thursday.

Ankita Raina marches on

Top-ranked Indian Ankita Raina and her doubles partner Suzan Lamens, meanwhile, reached the quarter-finals of the $25,000 ITF tournament in Prague, after getting a walkover on Wednesday.

Ankita Raina is also competing in the women’s singles in Prague where she is seeded second. She had managed to secure her first win since returning to competitive tennis after she beat Kyoka Okamura of Japan 7-5, 6-4 on Tuesday.
