Veteran Sharath Kamal will not be a part of the Indian table tennis squad for the World Table Tennis Team Championships 2022 to be held from September 30 to October 9 in Chengdu, China.
Sharath Kamal, who won three golds and a silver at CWG 2022, has chosen to sit out of the marquee tournament.
World No. 37 Sathiyan Gnanasekaran will lead the men’s team while Manika Batra is the highest-ranked player in the women’s team.
CWG 2022 gold-medallist and national champion Sreeja Akula is part of the women’s squad as well.
The top-11 teams from the 2021 Asian championships earned direct places for the 2022 world championships.
The Indian men’s team qualified for the world TT team championships after winning the bronze medal at the 2021 Asian championships. The women’s team had made the cut as they finished fifth.
India will be chasing their first-ever medal after independence at the world championships. Their only medal so far came at the inaugural world table tennis team championships in 1926, when they competed as British India. The men’s team won a bronze medal in that edition.
