The first international tournament in almost a year – the WTT Contender Doha – was a disappointing affair for the Indian table tennis contingent.
However, the second tournament in the WTT Middle East Hub – the WTT Star Contender Doha from March 8-13 – offers an opportunity to those four players to gather some much-needed momentum before the World and Asian Olympic qualifiers.
This time around, three of the contenders – Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Manika Batra – have been given direct entry to the main draw of the singles events at the WTT Star Contender Doha.
Sutirtha Mukherjee will have to go through three rounds of qualifiers in the singles to reach the main draw while she and Manika Batra could make the women’s doubles main draw if five teams drop out.
Meanwhile, G Sathiyan – who is nursing a slight shoulder injury – has chosen to focus only on the singles and has opted out of both the men’s doubles and mixed doubles at the WTT Star Contender Doha.
