Khelo India to be held alongside BRICS Games in 2021
Kiren Rijiju wants to use the popularity of Khelo India Games to bring the unique sporting cultures of the BRICS nations together next year.
India’s annual sports competition for the youth, the Khelo India Games, will be held alongside the BRICS Games next year, the Indian sports ministry has said.
The announcement was made during the meeting of sports ministers of the BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - nations on Tuesday.
“BRICS Games 2021 will be held during the same time and at the same venues as of Khelo India Games 2021,” Indian sports minister Kiren Rijiju said.
“Our players from various parts of the country, who will gather for Khelo India Games, will have the opportunity of witnessing BRICS Games from close quarters.
“This will be a great morale booster and motivational moment for them,” Rijiju added.
The Khelo India Youth Games and the Khelo India University Games have tasted success at the national level over the last few years. And Rijiju wants to use those platforms to feature the unique sporting cultures of the BRICS nations in India.
“During Khelo India Youth Games 2021, we will invite BRICS member countries to showcase their traditional indigenous games during the inaugural or closing ceremony of Khelo India,” Rijiju said.
Formed in 2009, BRICS is a regional cooperative organisation that comprises five countries with fast-growing economies. These nations meet annually at formal summits.
The BRICS Games were formed at the 8th BRICS Summit held in Goa, India in 2016 with the first edition of the BRICS Games held in Guangzhou, China the following year.
Khelo India is a national grassroots programme for school and university students with its first event held in 2018.
