India to start FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign in Guwahati
The 2021 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will see 16 teams playing 32 matches across five cities. Navi Mumbai to host final
The FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup will take place from February 17 to March 7 next year, with the Indian team to play their group stage matches in Guwahati’s Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.
The U-17 World Cup was originally scheduled in November this year before it got postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak that has affected the international sporting calendar.
However, FIFA released a revised schedule on Tuesday saying matches will take place across five cities - Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Kolkata.
“With the host for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 set to be announced on 25 June 2020, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2021 will provide football fans in India with a chance to welcome the future world stars and heroes of the women’s game next year,” the FIFA statement read.
The draw and venues
Though the draw is yet to take place it has been informed that India, who are ‘A1’ in the draw by virtue of being the hosts, will take on the team that will be A2 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on February 17.
India will take on teams drawn in A3 and A4 on February 20 and February 22.
While the other group A match will be on the same day in Guwahati, matches of groups C and D have been scheduled to take place at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium and Ahmedabad’s TransStadia Arena respectively, on February 18.
The quarter-finals will be held in four cities - Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata - on February 27 and 28.
While the two semi-finals will take place in Navi Mumbai and Bhubaneswar on March 3, the third-place classification game and the grand finale has also been scheduled to take place in Navi Mumbai.
The 2021 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will field 16 teams with India hosting 32 matches in total.
