Gaurav Solanki among Indian boxers knocked out by COVID in Istanbul
While seven members of the squad, including three boxers, have recovered and will return to India on Wednesday, coach Dharmendra Yadav continues to be in quarantine in Turkey.
As many as eight COVID-19 cases were reported in the Indian boxing contingent that competed at the Bosphorus boxing tournament in Istanbul, Turkey earlier this month. Three of them were boxers.
Gaurav Solanki, a gold medallist from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Prayag Chouhan, Brijesh Yadav, coaches Dharmendra Yadav and Santosh Birmole, physiotherapists Shikha Kedia and Umesh, and video analyst Nitin Kumar returned positive for the novel coronavirus last week.
They were forced into quarantine following the conclusion of the boxing event on March 19.
Seven members have tested negative for COVID-19 in the latest round of examinations and have been cleared to travel. They are expected to return to India on Wednesday.
Dharmendra Yadav, however, will continue to be in quarantine according to protocols as he is yet to return a negative test result.
A second-string Indian side that featured Gaurav Solanki and the former youth world champion Nikhat Zareen competed at the Bosphorus Boxing Tournament in Istanbul with both the pugilists clinching bronze medals in their respective weight categories.
Others who competed at the invitational event were Lalith Prasad, two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa, Duryodhan Negi, Naman Tanwar and Krishnan Sharma.
The women’s team included the former world championships medallist Sonia Lather, Parveen, Jyoti Grewal and Pooja Saini, apart from Nikhat Zareen.
