Amit Panghal top seed at Tokyo 2020, Mary Kom ranked seventh
Eight of the nine Indian boxers who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics are ranked in the top-10 in their respective weight categories.
Indian boxer Amit Panghal will go to the Tokyo Olympics as the world No.1 in men’s 52kg category.
The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Boxing Task Force has determined the rankings based on performances at the 2017 World Championships (2018 for women), the 2019 World Championships (both men and women), the 2019 Asian Boxing Confederation Championships and the Olympic Boxing Qualifiers held in 2020.
Amit Panghal, with 620 points, was given top seeding based on the above-mentioned criteria and could be offered a favourable draw on his debut at the Olympic Games.
London 2012 bronze medallist and six-time world champion MC Mary Kom, with 425 points, is ranked seventh in the women’s 51kg category.
Of the nine Indian boxers who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics - a record for Indian boxing - eight are ranked in the top-10 in their respective weight categories.
Simranjit Kaur, fourth in the women’s 60kg, will be the best-ranked women’s boxer from India at Tokyo.
Lovlina Borgohain, meanwhile, is ranked fifth in the women’s 69kg while Pooja Rani sits eighth in the 75kg category.
Among the male boxers, Ashish Kumar (75kg) is ranked ninth and so is Satish Kumar (91+ kg). Two-time Olympian Vikas Krishan is ranked 10th in the men’s 69kg.
Another Olympic debutant Manish Kaushik is the only Indian boxer who sits outside the top-10. He is ranked 18th in the men’s 63kg category.
