The Indian basketball team will play New Zealand, South Korea and the Philippines in Group A of the first round of qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup 2023, according to the draw held on Tuesday in Mies, Switzerland.

The FIBA World Cup 2023 will be held from August 25 to September 10, 2023, in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

India will play six matches - two against each team (home and away) - between November 2021 and July 2022 and have to finish in the top three to make it to the second and final round of qualifying.

The second round of qualifiers will take place between August 2022 and February 2023.

The Philippines and Japan are already guaranteed spots in the main event by virtue of being co-hosts. Both countries will nevertheless play both rounds of qualifying.

The third co-host, Indonesia will qualify for the FIBA World Cup 2023 if they make it to the quarter-finals of the FIBA Asia Cup next year.

There will be 16 teams in the Asian qualifiers, who will be competing for six spots in the main event.

In the first qualifying round, the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams each, with the top three in each group advancing to the second round.

Played since 1950, India have never qualified for the basketball World Cup in its 18 editions so far.
