The Indian football team will be back in action when it kicks off the final phase of the joint 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers with a match against Qatar on Thursday.
Led by Suni Chhetri, India are fourth in Group E of the qualifying campaign with three points from five matches. Asian champions Qatar lead the table with 16 points ahead of Oman (12 points) and Afghanistan (4 points). Bangladesh are last with one point.
Though India’s chances of making the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers are over, the team can gain direct entry into the next round of the Asian Cup qualifiers with a solid result in Qatar.
All the third-placed teams and the four best fourth-ranked teams from the eight groups move into the next round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. The remaining teams are pushed into a play-off round.
A Chhetri-less India had carved a hard-fought draw against Qatar in September 2019. With the Indian football team captain back, India can hope for improved performance.
Chhetri contracted COVID-19 in March this year and missed the friendlies against Oman and UAE later in the month. He is now fully fit.
Midfield mainstay Brandon Fernandes too returns to the squad following his injury battles.
Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac has named a 28-member squad for the campaign. The players will have to be at the top of their game against the likes of Almoez Ali, Hassan Al-Haydo and the Asian player of the year, Akram Afif.
