Indian badminton player Tasnim Mir replaced compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya as the new world No. 1 in the BWF world junior women’s badminton singles rankings released on Tuesday.

Tasnim Mir, who hails from Mehsana, Gujarat, was awarded 4000 ranking points for winning the India Chhattisgarh International Challenge 2022 on Sunday. The 17-year-old beat Malvika Bansod in the semis before trumping Samiya Imad Farooqui in the final.

Tasnim Mir created history by becoming the first Indian woman to achieve the junior world No. 1 rank earlier this year but was knocked off the perch by Anupama Upadhyaya briefly.

Mir returned to the top of the junior badminton world rankings with 19,250 points from 13 tournaments. Anupama, who has 18060 points from 20 tournaments, dropped down to the second place.

Haryana’s 14-year-old Unnati Hooda also moved up in the BWF rankings. Unnati Hooda won Odisha Open 2022 in January to become the youngest Indian to win a BWF Super 100 title. She has jumped 16 places since the start of September and is ranked fifth with 13,395 points despite featuring in just five BWF badminton tournaments this season.

Anwesha Gowda, also 14, is ranked seventh and completes the Indian line-up in the top 10 of the BWF junior women’s rankings.

In men’s junior world badminton rankings, Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, 18, who became the world No. 1 earlier in the year, is currently ranked seventh.

Lakshya Sen (2017), Siril Verma (2016) and Aditya Joshi (2014) were the other Indian junior shuttlers to achieve world No.1 rank in the past.

The junior world badminton championships will be held in Santander, Spain from October 24 to 30.
