Moscow will be the centre of attraction for the world of sports climbing when the IFSC Climbing World Championships 2021 gets underway at the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace from September 16-21.

The sport made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 with several medallists from the Games to be in action at the meet.

For India, Kumar Gaurav and Hritik Marne will compete in the men’s speed, bouldering and lead events.

Speed climbing is done on a standardised artificial wall where the objective is to climb the quickest. Bouldering is a type of free climbing done without ropes or harnesses where the climber has to finish with the fewest possible moves. Lead, meanwhile, involves climbing as high as possible within the prescribed times with the help of ropes as a safety system.

The 26-year-old Kumar Gaurav is from New Delhi and is competing in his second world meet and is known for his exploits in bouldering. He finished 73rd (combined) in the last climbing world championships in 2019 in Japan.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Hritik Marne is coming at the back of a second-place finish at the 25th IMF National Sport Climbing Championships in Odisha, earlier this year.

The Moscow worlds will see the bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020 Jakob Schubert of Austria in action in all disciplines while Sean Bailey of the USA, Japan’s three-time World Cup winner Tomoa Narasaki, and Italian Stefano Ghisolfi will be a force to reckon with in bouldering.

In speed, the former world champion Poland’s Marcin Dzienski will be eager to regain his crown.
