The United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) have cruised into the quarter-finals of Paris 2024.
It has been relatively smooth sailing for Emma Hayes and her side so far, winning three from three.
They dispatched Zambia 3-0 on their tournament curtain-raiser before issuing a scintillating 4-1 defeat to Germany.
Despite already having their ticket to the quarter-finals punched before their final group game against Australia, the Americans did not let up, beating them 2-1 on Wednesday (31 July).
Their third consecutive victory means they join Spain in becoming the only team to top their respective group unbeaten.
As a result, they will now play Japan in the last eight of the competition.
Read on to find out about their shared history, and how you can watch them live in Paris.
Japan v USWNT in the 2015 World Cup.
The USWNT's record against the vast majority of their opponents speaks for itself. When it comes to Japan, though, it is almost flawless across 40 meetings between the two.
But while the numbers tell one story, the games tell another. It has been one of the most exciting rivalries of the last few decades, despite the Americans continually edging it.
The 2011 and 2015 Women's World Cup clashes are particularly fond memories for fans, depending on which side your allegiance lies.
In the final of the 2011 tournament, it was 2-2 after extra time, before the Japanese won the title on penalties for their first major honours.
The USWNT enacted revenge four years later - and in some style too - when a Carli Lloyd hat-trick inside 16 minutes saw them on their way to a thumping 5-2 victory.
This duo also has a history at the Olympics, facing each other at London 2012, Beijing 2008, and Athens 2004 - all of which were won by the United States.
In fact, the last - and only - time Japan registered a win against the USWNT inside 90 minutes was back in 2012, at the Algarve Cup.
In 40 meetings, the Americans have won 31 to Japan's one, with eight draws contested.
Hayes is not the kind of coach to get complacent, but she will undoubtedly be enthused looking at this record going into Saturday's knockout tie.
