Indian sailors Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan were in for a mixed opening day at the Hempel World Cup Series – Allianz Regatta in Medemblik, the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Competing in the laser standard category, Vishnu Saravanan ended the day in 24th spot after two rounds. But Nethra Kumanan -- featuring in the laser radial segment -- had a tough time and finished 54th among the 56 competing sailors.

With as many as 60 athletes competing in laser standard -- the largest fleet in Medemblik -- the competition was divided into two groups -- blue and yellow. Vishnu was grouped in yellow.

The yellow group was led by Filip Jurisic of Croatia who scored 7.0 points for the overall second spot behind Great Britain’s Lorenzo Chiavarini.

Another sailor who impressed on the opening day was El Salvador’s Enrique Arathoon who fought tough winds to occupy third place after two rounds.

Meanwhile, in the laser radial segment, France’s Marie Barrue was the most consistent sailor as two second-place finishes in testing conditions saw her race to the top of the overall standings.

Belgium’s Emma Plasschaert is second while local talent Marit Bouwmeester came in third.

Six more rounds are left before the medal race.

The Allianz Regatta in Medemblik is the final high-profile event before the Tokyo Olympics in July-August. The Indian sailors are hoping to gain some valuable experience before heading for what will be their maiden Summer Games in Tokyo.
