Tadej Pogacar claimed the Giro d’Italia 2024 title on Sunday (26 May) in Rome, after dominating the men's road cycling stage race pretty much from start to finish.

The Slovenian won six stages on his debut outing at the Grand Tour race in Italy, and thrilled spectators by attacking even when his place at the top of the general classification was secure. The last man to take six stages and overall victory at the Giro was Eddy Merckx back in 1973.

After claiming the 'Maglia Rosa' leader's jersey on Stage Two, the 25-year-old never looked like relinquishing it as he completed victory in his first Giro. Colombia's Dani Martinez was second overall with last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas rounding out the podium in third.

For Pogacar, all roads now point to the Tour de France which gets underway on 29 June, and now has in his sights the Giro-Tour double, last achieved by Marco Pantani in 1998.

Sunday 26 May, Stage 21: Roma-Roma, 122 km

Already assured of the title, Tadej Pogacar was on lead-out duty for UAE Team Emirates colleague Juan Sebastian Molano as the final stage of the race developed into a bunch sprint in Rome. The Colombian was unable to land a blow.

Jonathan Milan, seeking his fourth stage win of this year's Giro, had to change his bike with nine kilometres to go and somehow made it back into contention. He did not quite have the legs to finish in front though, having to settle for second behind Tim Merlier who matched the Italian's tally of three stage wins.

Kaden Groves was third with Fernando Gaviria in fourth.

Pogacar crossed the line moments later in the peloton, to seal his overall victory.

Italian star Filippo Ganna held on to win the second time trial of the 2024 Giro d’Italia beating overall race leader Tadej Pogačar by half a minute.

Ganna watched as Pogačar began his assault on the 14th stage of this year’s race and must have had a sense of déjà vu as the Slovenian went through the first checkpoint with a slight advantage.

But Ganna’s time of 35:02 proved fast enough for him to take the stage with Pogačar finishing in second place. Pogačar consolidated his overall lead in the General Classification.

Tuesday 14 May, Stage 10: Pompei-Bocca della Selva, 142km

Valentin Paret-Peintre recorded an impressive breakaway victory atop Bocca della Selva to secure the first professional win of his career at the Giro d’Italia.

The Frenchman caught Jan Tratnik on the final climb and went on to cross the line 29 seconds ahead of compatriot and idol Romain Bardet, with Tratnik third.

“I can’t describe what I feel now. It’s just amazing,” said Paret-Peintre. “I was there to do a good result in the stage and now I have a Giro stage win as my first pro win. It’s amazing.

“I watched [Romain Bardet] when I was young when he finished on the podium of the Tour de France. I dreamed of seeing him on TV. Today I battled with him and beat him. I waited for the last three kilometres and then I attacked.”

Bardet’s efforts saw him move up to seventh in the General Classification standings, with Tadej Pogacar still leading the way.

Pogacar finished the stage in a group with his nearest rivals, meaning there was no change in time for the top four, while Cian Uijtdebroeks and Antonio Tiberi lost just four seconds.

Sunday 12 May, Stage 9: Avezzano-Napoli, 214 km

Olav Kooij timed his finish to perfection to take Stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia.

Team Polti Kometa riders Andrea Pietrobon and Mirco Maestri looked somewhat bemused at being allowed to break clear at the start. They were eventually caught inside the final 30km with Julian Alaphilippe then trying unsuccessfully to counter-attack his way to a stage win.

With 7km to go, Stage 1 winner Jhonatan Narvaez attacked on the final climb and opened up a lead of 10 seconds with one kilometre to go. But with the finish line in sight, he was swallowed up by the chasing pack and Kooij flew home ahead of Jonathan Milan with Juan Sebastian Molano in third.

Overall race leader Tadej Pogacar finished safely in the peloton with all of his main rivals, including Geraint Thomas who managed to regain touch after a crash 58km from the finish left him needing a new bike.

Alexey Lutsenko, who was comfortably inside the top 10 of the general classification before Saturday, quit before Sunday's stage due to illness.

Saturday 11 May, Stage 8: Spoleto-Prati di Tivo, high mountains,152 km

Tadej Pogacar made it two stage wins in the space of 24 hours with team-mate Rafael Majka giving him the perfect lead-out for the uphill sprint finish.

Romain Bardet and previous stage winners Jhonatan Narvaez and Pelayo Sanchez were in an early 14-man breakaway which stayed away until the closing Prati di Tivo Category 1 climb.

Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates' colleagues had done most of the work to reel in the leaders, but Bora-hansgrohe - the team of second-placed Dani Martinez - took up the chase with only Valentin Paret-Peintre staying clear inside the last 10km.

Paret-Peintre was finally caught 4km from home as Bardet and Alexey Lutsenko lost touch on the final climb. Martinez and Geraint Thomas were in the lead group with Pogacar and his main lieutenant Rafael Majka plus 10 others as the finish line approached.

Antonio Tiberi made the first break inside the last 2km with Pogacar quick to close down the move. It was clear the Slovenian wanted another stage win as he closed down further attacks before Majka returned to the front.

Pogacar sat on the Pole's wheel before coming out of the slipstream and powering to the finish to clinch his third stage win in his first Giro d'Italia and further extend his overall lead. Martinez was next across the line with Ben O'Connor in third.

Friday 10 May, Stage 7 - Foligno-Perugia, individual time trial, 40.6 km

Tadej Pogacar strengthened his hold on the Maglia Rosa with a stunning time trial success which increased his overall lead.

Home favourite Filippo Ganna thought he had done enough to win the stage, but was left speechless as Pogacar powered up the final climb into Perugia to convert a 47-second deficit at the second checkpoint into a 17-second victory.

Dani Martinez also enjoyed the uphill finish to the time trial to take eighth on the day and move above Geraint Thomas into second in the general classification.

Thursday 9 May, Stage 6 - Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio) to Rapolano Terme, 180km

Stage Six was set up for the puncheurs and breakaway riders, with its multiple gravel segments and short, sharp climbs that totalled 1,900m in altitude gain. Some segments of the route for the stage are also often used for the Stade Bianche classic race.

However, much like it did on Wednesday, the breakaway did not develop until well into the stage, past the day's first categorised climb up the Volterra.

Ultimately, a group of three developed a gap from a slightly larger chasing group, with the peloton content to sit back and let them go. The leaders were former world champion Julian Alaphilippe, Pelayo Sánchez, and Luke Plapp.

Ultimately, Sánchez won the three-way sprint in Rapolano Terme as the group held off their pursuers by around 20 seconds.

Tadej Pogacar kept the race lead to earn his fifth maglia rosa.

Wednesday 8 May, Stage 5 - Genova to Lucca, 178km

A tricky Stage Five which included 1,700m of climbing and two categorised ascents saw multiple breakaway attempts fail until a group of four went clear with around 100km left in the stage.

Despite the sprinters' teams working hard to close them down on the final run in to Lucca, the escapees held off the charging pack by 11 seconds.

Italy's Andrea Pietrobon attempted an audacious late attack from the front group inside the final kilometre, but was closed down by his breakaway companions with metres to spare, France's Benjamin Thomas taking the stage win in nearly exactly four hours as Pietrobon crossed third.

Tadej Pogacar kept the overall race lead.

Tuesday 7 May, Stage 4 - Acqui Terme to Andora, 190km

Stage Four also ended in a bunch sprint, but not before some heavy climbing that saw the peloton gain 1,700 metres of altitude and a tricky ascent right before the finish line.

Jonathan Milan made up for his near-miss on Stage 3 by claiming the victory in Andora, exactly a year after his first Giro stage win. The Italian was part of the bunch that caught a late attack from countryman Filippo Ganna with just 400m to go to the line.

However, there was some bad news for the race as points jersey contender and regular sprint favourite Biniam Girmay, who was third on Stage Three, withdrew after crashing twice.

There were no changes to the main general classification standings, with Tadej Pogacar holding onto the leaders' maglia rosa.

Monday 6 May, Stage 3 - Novara to Fossano, 166km

On stage three, the sprinters battled for victory for the first time in this year’s edition.

In a photo finish, Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step proved to be the fastest, taking the stage ahead of Jonathan Milan.

A late attack from Mikkel Honoré, Geraint Thomas and Tadej Pogacar almost caught the sprinters by surprise but they were reeled in by the peloton a few hundred metres from the finish line.

In the general classification standings, Pogacar retained the pink jersey and collected two bonus seconds on the way. His lead is now 46 seconds ahead of Thomas.

Tadej Pogacar won his first-ever Giro d'Italia stage in Santuario di Oropa

Sunday 5 May: Stage 2 - San Francesco al Campo to Santuario di Oropa, 161km

Tadej Pogacar overcame a puncture at the base of the Sanctuary of Oropa climb to claim his first-ever win at the Giro d'Italia and take the leader's pink jersey.

The stage featured the earliest summit finish in the race since 1989, and with less than 40km to go, Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) opened a gap of nearly two minutes over the chasers.

However, the peloton caught up with him midway through the 11.7km climb leading to the Sanctuary of Oropa. Pogacar, who suffered a puncture on his front wheel before the final ascent, quickly rejoined the group and attacked at 4.4km from the summit to cross the line with a 27-seconds lead over Dani Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers).

With this emphatic win, the Slovenian claimed the Maglia Rosa from the provisional leader Jhonatan Narvaez and now tops the general classification with a 45-seconds buffer over Thomas and Martinez.

Jhonatan Narvaez outsprinted Tadej Pogacar to take Stage 1 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia

Saturday 4 May: Stage 1 - Venaria Reale to Torino, 140km

Jhonatan Narvaez upstaged hot favourite Pogacar to take the Maglia Rosa on the opening day.

Frenchman Lilian Calmejane (Intermarche-Wanty) was the last rider to stay out from an early six-man breakaway with Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates colleagues at the front of the peloton. The relentless pace saw a number of general classification contenders, including Romain Bardet, Lucas Plapp and Thymen Arensman, being dropped.

With 10km to go, Calmejane was caught by a chase group of seven including Max Schachmann and Damiano Caruso. Pogacar then attacked from the front of the peloton on the final climb of San Vito with 4km to go and quickly reduced a gap of 45 seconds to nothing. Only Narvaez was able to go with him although Schachmann managed to just about stay in touch. And in a tactical finish, it was the national champion of Ecuador who won the sprint with Schachmann edging out Pogacar for second.
