The world number four, Lasha Bekauri, fell to his knees in celebration on adding the title of Olympic champion to his European championship gold won in Portugal in April. Germany’s Eduard Trippel, the European bronze medallist, claimed silver at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.

In the day's first bronze-medal match, world number five Davlat Bobonov of Uzbekistan beat Turkey’s Mihael Zgank by IPPON (knockout). A disappointed Zgank had been doing everything right but just got outsmarted by Bobonov at the end.

In the second match, Krisztian Toth of Hungary beat Mikhail Igolnikov, despite the ROC athlete dominating most of the bout.
