Gangwon 2024: Key athletes to watch on day 4 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games

The alpine skiing continues on day 4 of Gangwon 2024, where the women’s field will compete in giant slalom. Italy’s rising slalom star Giorgia Collomb will be hoping to add to her silver from the combined event, and do what her compatriot Camilla Vanni did in super-G by winning gold.

Romy Ertl, the daughter of the three-time Olympic medallist Martina Ertl, is another skier who has already finished on the podium at Gangwon 2024 and is tipped for more medals. The U.S. athlete Annika Hunt, who came second in the National Junior Championship in both giant slalom and slalom.

In biathlon Antonin Guy of France has already won two gold medals (individual and single mixed relay), and he looks like the man to beat in the men’s sprint competition. If the Frenchman takes another gold, he will become the first biathlete to complete a hat-trick of golds at a Winter Youth Olympic Games.

On the women’s side, Czechia’s Ilona Plechacova is considered the heavy favourite after distancing her opponents by more than a minute on the 10km individual.

Tunisia made their Winter Olympic debut on Monday in the women's monobob, and they will also be represented in the men’s. Jonathan Lourimi has improved day-by-day during training at the Alpensia Sliding Center, and the Tunisian has the chance of becoming the first medallist for his country at a Winter Olympic event.

Sweden won gold four years ago in Lausanne in the men’s ski cross. This year they put their faith in William Shing, who finished sixth at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in March.

Morgan Shute of the United States clinched the women’s national title and took home a seventh place at the Junior World Ski Championships last year. She will be a medal contender for Tuesday's the women's ski cross competition.

Italy have dominated in luge so far at Gangwon. Leon Haselrieder, Manuel Weissensteiner, Philipp Brunner, and Alexandra Oberstolz will be looking to add the fourth gold medal in the sport for their country at these Youth Olympics, when the team relay takes place.

Skeleton carries on with the men's competition. Latvia are lining up with a strong duo in Emils Indriksons and Dāvis Valdovskis that both have delivered impressive performances in the Youth Series.

At the Gangneung Oval, the speed skating 1500m discipline will be contested for both men and women. The Austrian sisters Jeannine Rosner and Sarah Rosner are both competing in the event.

Lim Leewon of the Republic of Korea finished in the top five at both ISU Junior World Cups in Italy, and she will be hoping to make her country proud on home soil. Japan’s Kojima Kaede came in the top ten at the same events and could very likely challenge for a medal.

For the men, Finn Sonnekalb of Germany stands out as the heavy favourite, after claiming gold in the men's 500m on Monday.
