Gangwon 2024: Key athletes to watch on day 3 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games

Alpine skiing carries on with the combined event on the third day of competition at Gangwon 2024. In the women's competition Romy Ertl of Germany, the daughter of the three-time Olympic medallist Martina Ertl, will be aiming for a medal after missing out on a medal in super-G.

U.S. skier and super-G national champion Annika Hunt is a student of the same institution where Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin trained for four years. She and Italy’s slalom prodigy Giorgia Collomb are contending for the podium spots.

In the men’s field, Slovenia’s Miha Oserban, who comes from the same village as double Olympic champion Tina Maze, will be one of the top favourites.

Day 3 also sees the bobsleigh competitions start, where Tunisia will debut at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Sophie Ghorbal, and Beya Mokrani will be the proud representatives of their country in the monobob event. Maja Voigt of Denmark is the heavy favourite to take gold, as last season's Youth World Series winner.

In the women’s short track speed skating 500m event, Chung Jaehee of the Republic of Korea, is hoping to make her country proud. However, silver medallist of the 2023 European Youth Olympic in the 500m event, Dóra Szigeti from Hungary, and winner of the 1500m at Gangwon 2024 Yang Jingru of the People’s Republic of China will be difficult to beat.

For the men, Brazil’s Lucas Koo recently became the first from his country to compete in a World Cup in more than 15 years. Home favourite Joo Jaehee, who won gold in the 1500m and Hungary’s Dominik Major, a three-time gold medallist at the Winter European Youth Olympic Festival, are also bidding for Youth Olympic glory.

Another sliding discipline, skeleton, begins, with the women’s field being the first going down the track. Nanna Johansen of Denmark is considered the gold medal favourite, as the Youth Series champion. Her greatest competition will likely come from Liang Yuxin of People’s Republic of China, who finished second in the series.

Day 3 also includes the first speed skating events. Both men and women will be competing in the 500m. Jung Huidan of the Republic of Korea claimed the ISU Junior World Cup Series #2 in the 2023/24 season and is one to look out for in the women’s competition.

Colombia will be participating with both Isabella Caicedo and Isabella Vargas representing in the women's event. On the men’s side Liu Hanbin of the People’s Republic of China and Germany's Finn Sonnekalb both finished in the top ten at the ISU Junior World Cup in Collalbo and in Baselga di Pinè, Italy, and they are coming into the competition showing great form.
