Gangwon 2024: Key athletes to watch on day 13 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games

The first set of medals on the final day of Gangwon 2024, will be awarded in cross-country skiing.

The mixed 4x5km relay is contested for the first time at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. A team of four will race 5km each, with the first two using classical technique and the last two using free technique.

The French mixed team look like the ones to beat following their results in the 7.5km classic. Agathe Margreither and Annette Coupat finished in second and third place in the women’s race, while Quentin Lespine took bronze and Gaspard Cottaz was fourth in the men’s.

Germany are lining up with a strong team as well. Jakob Moch is targeting his third medal at the event after claiming silver in sprint and gold in 7.5km classic.

Sweden and Italy will be strong medal contenders too.

Figure skating ends the action from the Gangneung Ice Arena with the team event. Japan, Republic of Korea, and the United States are the expected favourites for the podium.

In the men’s snowboard halfpipe competition, local hero Lee Chaeun has already showed great form by winning the slopestyle event at Gangwon 2024. The 2023 halfpipe world champion will be challenged by New Zealand’s Campbell Melville Ives, who claimed bronze in big air at these Youth Olympics and won a halfpipe FIS competition before coming to the Republic of Korea.

Keep an eye on Yamada Ryusei of Japan. The halfpipe national champion was fifth in the World Cup in Copper Mountain, United States last month and arrived at Gangwon with confidence.

For the women, Choi Seo Woo of the Republic of Korea was the heavy favourite, until a back injury ruled out the 15-year-old super talent.

Instead, USA’s Sonora Alba will be one to look out for in the absence of Choi at the halfpipe course in Welli Hilli. The 17-year-old made her senior World Cup debut two years ago and has already broken into the Top 10 twice.

Felicity Geremia of Canada will be an outsider for the Youth Olympic title.

Finally, the curling mixed doubles will have medals on offer. Both the semi-finals and final are played on the last day of competition.
