Gangwon 2024: Key athletes to watch on day 10 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games

For the first time at Gangwon 2024, the cross-country skiers will be in action on day 10, where the men and women take on the sprint freestyle competition.

In the women’s event, Heidi Bucher of Austria, who won the sprint classic competition at last year’s European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), will be aiming for more success in Gangwon.

Sweden are known as a strong cross-country nation, and Elsa Taenglander is one to look out for. The 16-year-old Swede is also a very talented biathlete.

Showing the sports diversity, Ashley Tshanda Ongong'a, will be the first ever female Kenyan to compete in cross country skiing at a Winter Olympic event.

On the men’s side, Italy’s Federico Pozzi will be a strong medal contender. The 17-year-old Italian claimed a silver medal in sprint at the EYOF.

Slovenia’s Lovrenc Karnicar and Tine Sporn both have top ten results in FIS competitions this season. Karnicar is the Slovenian sprint junior champion, and his father was famous for being the first to climb Mount Everest and ski down the mountain afterwards.

In figure skating pairs, the battle for gold seems to be between Annika Behnke/Kole Sauve from Canada and Cayla Smith/Jared McPike of the United States who were the pairs to score highest in the short program. On day 10, the free skating waits the pairs with medals on offer.

The men’s singles will feature US figure skater Jacob Sanchez as the favourite following his short program performance.

However, Slovakia’s Adam Hagara is not far behind before the free skating discipline.

Nordic combined begins as well on day 10 with the individual event for each gender.

For the women, Finland will hope that Minja Korhonen can continue her impressive development at these Youth Winter Olympic Games. At 16, she has already finished on the podium in the World Cup, which she did in Ramsau, Austria last month.

16-year-old Ingrid Laate of Norway is another athlete to keep an eye on. She has already debuted in the senior World Cup, where she recorded a top 15 result last year.

Also, in the men’s competition, Norway has a podium contender in Erik Leiraamo, who has won two Youth Cup competitions in Czechia in 2022.

Manuel Senoner of Italy, who took silver in the team event at the 2023 Winter European Olympic Festival, is tipped for a medal, and he finished two places ahead of Leiraamo, when they both competed at the Continental Cup in Trondheim earlier in January.

Czechia’s Lukas Dolezal also deserves to be mentioned among the expected medal favourites. At last year’s Winter European Olympic Festival, he clinched gold in the individual event.
