Angel Daleman claimed her third gold and fourth medal of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024, with victory win the women's mass start speed skating event.
The Dutch star won her semi-final comfortably, and skated a perfect tactical race in the final on Friday (26 January), hitting the front and avoiding crashes in the latter stages, before crossing the finish line in first ahead of Netherlands teammate Jasmijn Veenhuis, who picked up silver.
Liu Yunqi from People's Republic of China, took the bronze.
Daleman also claimed gold in the individual 500m and 1500m races, and a bronze with her teammates in the mixed relay. By claiming gold Daleman became the first woman to win three events in speed skating at the Winter Youth Olympics.
“It’s amazing to hear that I’m the first, and that I can do it, while I have fun. I didn’t even know that I'm the first,” Daleman told Olympics.com. “But I’m still a little sad that I didn't get any medal in short track, also because I came so close. I will do that at the big Olympics.”
The men's final was won by German skater Finn Sonnekalb, ahead of China's Pan Baoshuo (silver) and Eirik Andersen from Norway*.* It was also the German's third win at Gangwon, making him only the second male speed skater to take three golds at the Winter Youth Olympics - and the first in 12 years.
“It's incredible to win three gold medals here,” Sonnekalb said after the race. “I hope this is the beginning of a long career. I will give my best to be at Milano-Cortina 2026.”
