Day one of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024 brought us our first medallists, historical moments - and so much more.

Brazil won its first-ever medal at a Winter YOG courtesy of snowboarder Zion Bethonico who took bronze in the men's snowboard cross event.

It was a particularly valiant effort from the 17-year-old who fought back from a bruising crash in the first heat to advance to the final.

History was also written in Gangneung where Team Nigeria made their highly anticipated Winter YOG debut in curling.

And the home fans provided the loudest cheer of the day after the Republic of Korea got off to a golden start in the men's 1500m short track.

17-year-old Joo Jaehee successfully staved off multiple attempts from Zhang Xinzhe (CHN) to take the win in front of some 12,000 jubilant fans.
