Gaganjeet Bhullar wins his 10th PGTI title: 5 things you must know about the veteran golfer 

Veteran golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar bagged his 10th Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) title after a hard-fought win at the TATA Steel Tour Championship 2020 in Jamshedpur on Sunday.

His maiden win came in the PGTI Players Championship in 2009, over a decade ago.

Since then, Bhullar has continued to establish himself at the PGTI events by clinching four more titles in 2009 - PGTI Players Championship presented by Rambagh Golf Club, PGTI Players Championship presented by Aamby Valley Golf Club, PGTI Players Championship presented by Eagleton and DLF Masters.

His consistent run saw him bag the PGTI Players Championship presented by Bombay Presidency Golf Club in 2010.

In 2011, he clinched the American Express Bangladesh Open, PGTI Players Championship presented by Royal Calcutta Golf Club and Aircel PGTI Players Championship presented by Chandigarh Golf Club. 

It, however, took him nine years to win his 10th title. However, he has never missed a cut in a PGTI event - a terrific record. 

But Bhullar has achieved plenty more in his glittering career. Let’s take a quick look at the Arjuna Award-winning golfer.

Sporting family

Bhullar was born in 1988 in Kapurthala, India, in a sporting family. His father and mother represented India internationally in track & field and hockey respectively.

Bhullar was early to embrace golf. He was just four years old when he began learning the game from his father H.S Bhullar.

Asian Games medal as an amateur golfer

He had a fine run in his amateur career as he was India’s No.1 amateur in 2004 and 2006. He won the 2005 World Junior Masters Championship as well.

Besides that, he was also a part of the India team which brought home the silver medal from the 2006 Asian Games. He finished seventh in the individual event.

He then went on to begin his professional career later in 2006 when he was just 18.

European Tour title

Bhullar has one European title to his name. This came when he bagged the Fiji International title on August 5, 2018 with a score of 274. He left behind Australia's Anthony Quayle as the runner-up in the event.

Bhullar also has a European Challenger Tour victory to his name, which came at the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in 2011, where he notched up a score of 283 to finish ahead of England's Matt Ford. He was the youngest Indian to achieve this feat as well.

Nine Asian Tour triumphs - An Indian record

The Amritsar-born golfer has nine Asian Tour titles to his name. His maiden win came at the Indonesia President Invitational tournament in 2009 and then went on to bag Asian Tour International (2010), Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (2012), Venetian Macau Open (2012), Indonesia Open (2013), Shinhan Donghae Open (2016), Bank BRI-JCB Indonesia Open (2016), Macao Open (2017) and Fiji International in 2018.

His win in Indonesia in 2009 also saw him become the youngest Indian to win an Asian title. Throughout the last decade, Bhullar has been consistent with his performance at the Asian level.

Youngest Indian to play in a major

Bhullar became the youngest Indian to play a major when he participated in the 2009 Open Championship in Scotland. He qualified for the Open by winning the Asian International Final Qualifying in April 2009.

However, he missed the cut by four strokes in an event won by American golfer Stewart Cink.
