Gabby Douglas: This is "not the end of my gymnastics story"
Gymnastics fans may not have seen the last of three-time Olympic gold medallist Gabby Douglas of the United States in competition.
The 27-year-old announced on Wednesday (29 May) that she would not take part in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, which was to have been the next step in her improbable comeback after nearly eight years away from competition. But on Sunday morning (2 June), Douglas took to Instagram to thank her supporters and promised more to come.
"Wow, what a journey. First off, I just wanted to say that I am forever grateful for all of your support, grace, and love. It truly has touched my heart," Douglas wrote. "I’m sad to say that due to a foot injury during practice, I will not be able to continue my 2024 journey. This may be the end of this chapter but not the end of my gymnastics story.
"Thank you all for being with me on this journey and lifting me up on my lowest days, I love you all so much!" she concluded.
Douglas’ history-making career first captivated the world at London 2012, where she helped Team USA to its first team gold medal in 20 years. Days later, she soared to the all-around crown, a first for an African-American.
Following a competitive break, Douglas returned to the mat in 2015, again helping USA to a world team title and finishing runner-up to superstar Simone Biles in the all-around at the global meet.
At Rio 2016, she missed the all-around final despite finishing third in the qualifying standings due to a rule that only allows two athletes per nation to advance. Biles and fellow London 2012 gold medallist Aly Raisman were first and second there.
Still, Douglas played an integral role in that squad’s team win – her third Olympic gold medal – contributing a 15.766 on the uneven bars in the medal round.
With competition at the U.S. Championships set to wrap up later on Sunday, Douglas had a message for the women competing in the second of three meets that will determine Team USA's Paris 2024 squad.
"Sending all the best to the girls tonight!" she said. "Always cheering USA on!"
