Alex Yee got Team England off to a storming start in the first medal event of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, claiming gold in the men's triathlon in a time of 50:34.
The expected head-to-head with Hayden Wilde (50:47) ensued with Yee catching up to the New Zealander in the run after being 16-seconds behind at the end of the cycle phase.
The two were side-by-side until Wilde was cited for a penalty for unclipping his helmet early during the transition between the bike and run disciplines, the 10-second penalty proving decisive in the race for gold, but not enough for Australia's Matt Hauser (50:50) to catch Wilde, who claimed silver. Hauser bagged bronze.
In the women's event, again the two favourites, defending champion Flora Duffy and England's Georgia Taylor-Brown were the ones to beat. The twosome broke away from the pack midway through the cycle, and were side by side until the Bermudan stole a few yards on Taylor-Brown in the final transition to take the lead in the run, which she never relinquished. The two finished in the same positions as Tokyo 2020.
Scotland's Beth Potter used her running finesse to breakaway from the chasing pack. Formerly an Olympic runner on the track, Potter competed in the 10,000m at Rio 2016 coming 34th, but decided she wanted to try triathlon, so she called on a certain pair of brothers – Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, with three Olympic gold medals between them – to help, and they've backed her ever since.
Next up is the para triathlon and mixed relay on Sunday 31 July.
