The FIH Pro League is set to resume in September, according to the revised international hockey federation calendar.

The Indian men’s hockey team will resume their campaign on April 10, 2021, with an away match against Argentina.

Halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Thursday that the league will restart on September 22 with Germany hosting reigning world champions Belgium.

“All hockey fans have been eagerly waiting for the day where the world’s best teams would play again,” FIH president Narinder Batra said in a statement.

“Whilst the pandemic is not over and staying healthy while playing hockey is an absolute priority, it’s a sign of hope that the resumption of the 2020 FIH Hockey Pro League is looming.”

The Indian hockey team currently occupies the fourth spot in the FIH Pro League standings with two draws, two wins and two losses in their six matches.

India’s last match in the FIH Pro League was played in Bhubaneswar on February 22 against former world champions Australia. India beat the Aussies in a shootout 3-1 to earn a bonus point.

Indian hockey updated FIH Pro League schedule

The 2020 FIH Pro League season was initially scheduled to finish in June, however, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the FIH suspended the campaign in March and have now extended the current season till May 30, 2021.

India will resume their campaign in 2021 with two away matches on April 10 and 11 against Argentina before taking on Great Britain on May 8 and 9.

The Indian hockey team will then face Spain in a double-header on May 12 and 13 before heading to Germany to take on the four-time Olympic gold-medallists on May 18 and 19. That will conclude India’s European tour.

India will be in action on the final two days of the FIH Pro League and will host New Zealand on May 29 and 30 at home.

India’s journey in FIH Pro League

India have fared well in their maiden campaign in the FIH Pro League. So far, they have played all their matches at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

They upstaged the Netherlands 5-2 on their debut on January 18, before winning the shootout 3-1 against the same side the following day.

India continued their good run in the FIH Pro League beating reigning world champions Belgium 2-1 on February 8 in front of the jubilant home fans but lost the second match 3-2 the next day.

Australia handed India their second-straight defeat with a 4-3 win on February 21, but India prevailed on penalties in their second encounter 24 hours later.
