The 2021-22 season’s first international break is round the corner and European teams are scheduled to play three fixtures over the next week.

Some teams will play two FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers and a friendly match, while others are scheduled to play three qualifiers.

For the European qualifiers, 55 UEFA nations have been divided into 10 groups of five or six teams each. With 13 European spots available for the FIFA World Cup 2022, the group winners earn direct spots to the tournament.

The 10 group runners-up will head to a separate playoffs tournament and will be joined by the two best-ranked teams from the UEFA Nations League 2020-21, which are yet to be determined.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to celebrate his return to Manchester United by ensuring Portugal hold onto the top spot in Group A after this round of qualifiers.

Portugal sit top of Group A with seven points, level with Serbia, but lead due to a better goal difference. Portugal face Ireland and Azerbaijan in the qualifiers and also play Qatar in a friendly over the next week.

Euro 2020 champions Italy are currently top of Group C with nine points and have a relatively easy run of fixtures against Bulgaria, Switzerland and Lithuania in the qualifiers this week.

Defending FIFA World Cup champions France face Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ukraine and Finland in the qualifiers in their bid to keep hold of the top spot in Group D.

Euro 2020 runners-up England are leading Group I and will take on Hungary, Poland and Andorra in the qualifiers.

Four-time FIFA World Cup champions Germany, currently third in Group J, will aim to pick up some much-needed points against Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland in their bid to climb up the qualifying table.

The Asian, African and South American qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 will also be played over the next week.
