The United States men’s basketball team made it to the semi-finals of the the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Granted, it took an earlier loss to Lithuania for the five-time world champions to rediscover their fire, but a 100-63 thrashing of Italy in the quarter-finals ensured that Steve Kerr's men will be the favourites to win their final-four match against Germany on Friday, 8 September.
The US, who have already obtained a team quota spot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, opened their World Cup campaign with a 99-72 victory over New Zealand's Tall Blacks before taking out Greece 109-81. They then dispatched Jordan 110-62 to ensure they finished on top of Group C. An 85-73 win over Montenegro was followed by that 110-104 loss to Lithuania, before they rebounded with that big win over Italy.
Their opponents Germany are the last unbeaten team in the tournament, and qualified for the semis courtesy of a nervous 81-79 over Latvia. It will be the Europeans' second World Cup semi-finals appearance, after Dirk Nowitzki led Germany to a bronze medal in 2002.
The US beat Germany 99-91 on Aug. 20 in Abu Dhabi, rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit and needing an 18-0 run down the stretch to take control in an exhibition game.
The winner on Friday will progress through to the FIBA World Cup final on Sunday, 10 September in Manila's Mall of Asia Arena, while the losing semi-finalists will play each other earlier that day at the same venue.
