Germany and Serbia will face off in the final of the 2023 FIBA World Cup on Sunday, 10 September, and after taking down two North American powerhouses in the semis, both teams are feeling fearless.
“If you’re worried, you don’t belong here," Moritz Wagner said after Germany's 113-111 shock win over Team USA on Friday. "You got to play with no fear, you got to play hungry and you got to be aggressive.”
Earlier on Friday, Serbia defeated Canada 95-86 to advance to their second-ever World Cup final.
Germany will be appearling in a global basketball final for the first time.
“This is the biggest win in German basketball history," Wagner said. "This means a lot and I think everybody understands how much this means for German basketball and German sports culture.”
His younger brother Franz Wagner was one of the outstanding players in the semif-final against the reigning Olympic champions, recording 22 points and five rebounds in his return to the court. He missed the earlier games due to an ankle injury.
Being back in the line-up with his teammates was one of the highlights of the historic game, Franz Wagner said after the win, also noting the special bond that exists between the German players.
"We have got a great mix of characters. Everybody’s playing for the team, not for themselves, and just playing for the guy next to you," he said. "We have a great group dynamic. It’s a lot of fun being among these guys.”
Germany and Serbia have already secured Olympic quotas for Paris 2024 after making the semi-finals, as the top two-ranked European teams.
The last faced they faced eachother at the Worlds in 2010, where Germany won by a single point.
