Australia will be present at the Paris 2024 men's basketball tournament, it was confirmed today (30 August), after New Zealand lost to Greece in the final Group C game of the FIBA World Cup 2023.
The Boomers and Tall Blacks are the lone representatives from the Oceania region at this year's World Cup, meaning that the two teams were in competition for a lone Olympic quota spot.
Australia had already secured thier passage to the next round of the FIBA World Cup after finishing second in Group E with a 2-1 record, but their Olympic future was only secured when New Zealand were beaten 83-74 by Greece. The Greek team advance to phase two of the World Cup out of Group C along with the USA.
Australia won Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020 in 2021, and now join host nation France - who were stunningly eliminated from the World Cup earlier this week - as the only two nations with a quota for the men's basketball tournament at Paris 2024 so far.
There are 10 spots still available; Europe and the Americas each have two dedicated spots, while Africa, Asia, and Oceania each receive one quota spot from the World Cup.
The last four slots will be allocated in the upcoming summer through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
