The stages - and locations - are set for the four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments that will decide which four National Olympic Committees obtain the remaining four quota spots for basketball at next summer's Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The four hosts chosen by the FIBA Executive Committee are Piraeus, Greece; Riga, Latvia; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Valencia, Spain. The tournaments are set to run 2-7 July 2024.
24 teams will compete across the four events with 19 of the teams having earned their places at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The five other competitors were winners of FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments held in August.
"The level and the depth that our sport has shown over the last years, clearly a result of the qualifiers, of the windows, I believe anything can happen in the top 20, 25, in the ranking, and this we saw both in the World Cup, the prequalifiers, I'm sure we will see it in the OTQs," said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis during a YouTube livestream announcing the event.
Luol Deng, President of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, presided over the draw. South Sudan has already qualified for the Paris Games as the only African team so far, along with hosts France, world champions Germany, United States, Australia and Japan.
Some mouthwatering encounters are in the schedule of the qualifying tournaments.
