Fencing: Man Wai Vivian Kong wins women’s fencing epee individual gold; France's Mallo-Breton takes silver at Paris 2024

One hit decided the women’s fencing epee individual gold at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 as the competition went into overtime, tied at 12-12. Man Wai Vivian Kong won gold with the final strike to make it 13. With her win, Kong becomes Hong Kong, China’s first-ever female fencing medallist.

The dramatic match saw Kong come from behind after being down 7-1 to France’s Auriane Mallo-Breton who won silver in front of the cheering hometown crowd at the Grand Palais.

Following her win, Kong said, "I’m happy - being able to fence in this palace has always been my dream. I love Paris."

She explain her change in epee for the match, saying, "“I was using the same epee through all my bouts, but Auriane was my first left-handed opponent so I decided to use a different epee. I was out of solutions."

Kong added of her opponent, “She’s an amazing fencer.”

First-time Olympian Eszter Muhari of Hungary won bronze.
