The European Curling Championships 2023 are heading to Aberdeen where, from 18-25 November, 20 curling teams will battle it out for the continental crown.

The event in Scotland, streaming live on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app for mobile devices, will see the men’s and women’s championships take place concurrently, meaning a guaranteed week of jammed-pack curling action.

Both contests will adopt the same format. All teams will play each other once in a round-robin before the top four teams are paired up for two semi-final matches.

The winners will advance to the final while bronze medal matches will take place for the runners-up.

Additionally, the top eight teams across both competitions will qualify for the World Curling Championships 2024. As hosts of the men's competition, Switzerland are automatically qualified as one of the eight European teams.

European Curling Championships 2023: Teams to watch

Men’s competition

Defending champions Scotland, represented by skip Bruce Mouat and his team, will be drawing on the might of a home crowd as they target a hat-trick of titles in Aberdeen.

As the reigning world champions and Olympic silver medallists, the Scots will be a force to be reckoned with when the action gets underway but there are plenty in the field ready to take them on.

Italy, led by skip Joel Retornaz, are on red-hot form right now having just claimed their second Grand Slam of Curling title of the season and their third-ever.

The victory means the Italians head to Aberdeen as the highest-ranked team, per the World Curling rankings, and with Milano Cortina 2026 approaching on the horizon, international wins will be seen as part of the build-up.

Also in the mix will be Olympic champions, Sweden.

After missing out on last year’s competition due to injury, skip Niklas Edin is back leading the Swedes and the 38-year-old will have in his sights an eye-watering eighth European title.

Edin’s first win on the European stage was back in 2009 with his second title win following in 2012. Then, from 2014 to 2017 the Swedes held an iron grip on the Championship, winning four consecutive titles before being felled by Scotland.

Sweden went on to reclaim the title in 2019 before Scotland’s pair of titles in 2021 and 2022. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Women’s competition

Last year's women's event threw up a surprise winner with Denmark's Madeleine Dupont defeating Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni in an extra-end final.

The victory marked Denmark's second-ever European curling title.

The Danish team, that will try to defend their crown, will look markedly different with Dupont sitting out the action following news of her pregnancy. Mathilde Halse will instead take on the charge of skip.

Denmark won't be the only team that has a new look in Aberdeen. Sweden, which has for the past few years been represented by Anna Hasselborg, will, this year, be fronted by Isabella Wrana. Wrana defeated Hasselborg in a qualifier for the event, to earn the right to don the Swedish colours.

The threats to the Danes' title defence will come from all sides with Scotland's Rebecca Morrison, Switzerland's Tirinzoni, and Italy's Stefania Constantini all with the potential to do well.

Bronze medallist from last year Morrison, will have the home support, Constantini, the experience of winning Olympic gold in mixed doubles and Tirinzoni, the backing of three world titles.
