Adem Asil gave the local crowd something to shout about on claiming the men's artistic gymnastics all-around title on day three of the European Championships in Antalya, Türkiye scoring 84.965 to leave the arena rocking and Asil receiving the bumps from his team-mates. That's history for Türkiye in claiming a first-ever European all-around title.
Jake Jarman of Great Britain secured silver with 83.463 while Illia Kovtun of Ukraine snatched the bronze from Armenia's Artur Davtyan in the last rotation, scoring a total across the six apparatus of 83.032 to Davtyan's 82.665.
Adem Asil claims men's European title
Leo Saladino of France started off the competition with a bang with a sky-high triple twist on vault, scoring 14.633 to have him lead the competition after the first rotation. If he showcases that vault at Paris 2024 next year, he’ll blow the roof off the place.
The first rotation saw Jarman perform a super difficult floor routine to receive a mark of 14.366 while Asil and Davtyan also went through cleanly. The normally tricky pommel horse followed but all three sailed through but the highest qualifier heading into today's competition, Illia Kovtun of Ukraine struggled and lost ground.
The still rings saw Asil roar into the lead with a huge 15.033 and from then on, was the one to catch.
Switzerland’s Noe Siefert was also performing steadily and was in with a chance of a medal right until his last rotation, pommel horse, where he fell short.
Davtyan performed a sky-high vault that floated down to the mat, keeping him in contention for a medal, scoring 15.100. Jarman beat the reigning world vault champion though, with a sensational vault mark of 15.266.
A fall on the apparatus put Kovtun seemingly out of reach of the medals but his favoured parallel bars was next and sure enough a mammoth 15.433 put him back in with a medal chance.
On the last rotation, Jarman's clean routine secured the Brit a first all-around medal, with silver.
The penultimate gymnast on high bar was Asil who held his nerve, showcasing a beautiful routine, and punching the air and tapping his heart on completion.
The crowd held their breath for the last to go in the men's all-around final, Kovtun, who executed a clean routine to raise him into the medals with bronze, beating Davtyan by 2.300 marks. Seifert finished a creditable fifth just 0.001 points behind the Armenian.
Next up, the women's edition taking place Friday 14 April.
