Paris 2024 track cycling: Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand races to women's sprint gold
Ellesse Andrews won her second gold of Paris 2024 with victory in the track cycling women's sprint event on Sunday 11 August. This is the first medal in the sprint won by a New Zealander in Olympic history.
The New Zealander added to the Olympic title she won in the women's keirin with a thrilling 2-0 victory over Germany's Lea Friedrich. After winning silver in the women's team sprint event, the Kiwi now has three medals from these Games.
“I feel like I'm living in a dream. I don't really know what to say," an elated Andrews said after the final race. 'It's been a massive week, and I'm just so proud of how I've managed to carry myself to the end of the competition."
Friedrich was equally pleased with her silver medal, which she won in front of her family.
“It’s unbelievable for me, I can't describe this feeling now,' she said. "I'm so proud of myself, and it's so nice to see my mother and my father over there. She's my biggest support."
"It's my first (Olympic) medal in an individual event, I'm so proud of myself. (I'm) also quite tired from the tough week with ups and downs."
In the bronze medal race, Emma Finucane of Great Britain claimed her third medal of the Games (one gold, two silvers) after beating the Netherlands' Hetty van de Wouw.
"It's been sensational," said the Briton. "This whole week has been such a rollercoaster of emotions. I have been to highs, I have been to lows. To finish with that bronze medal, I could not have asked for anything more.
"I left everything on that track. I have had a whole week of racing. I'm really proud of how I managed the expectations and the pressure."
