Indian ace PV Sindhu and Aakarshi Kahyap will be the two Indians in the fray in the women’s singles event at the Denmark Open 2023 badminton tournament, scheduled from October 17 to 22 in Odense, Denmark.

Asian Games 2023 bronze medallist HS Prannoy was also expected to return for the BWF Super 750 event in Denmark after missing last week’s Arctic Open in Finland with a back injury but the Indian badminton player pulled out at the last moment. The pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, world No. 1 in the men’s doubles badminton rankings, were also expected to return at the Odense meet for what would have been their first outing after winning a historic gold medal at Hangzhou 2023. Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat are also in the men’s singles main draw. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and the duo of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila were listed to compete in the women’s and men’s doubles, respectively but didn't compete. There are no Indian mixed doubles teams at the Denmark Open 2023.

For Indian badminton player PV Sindhu, the Denmark Open will be an opportunity to claim her first BWF World Tour title of the year. The two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion made the semi-finals at the Arctic Open last week.

In Denmark, PV Sindhu has been drawn against Scottish shuttler Kirsty Gilmour in her opener but may come up against former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan or Indonesian seventh-seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the second round.

Two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan remains a potential quarter-final opponent for the Indian shuttler.

Prakash Padukone (men’s singles in 1980), Kidambi Srikanth (men’s singles in 2017) and Saina Nehwal (women’s singles in 2012) are the only Denmark Open champions from India to date.

Results at the Denmark Open will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for badminton started on May 1 this year.
