Curling fans, are you ready?

The next generation of curlers from around the world will be out in force as they compete at the Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympic Games.

From 19 January to 1 February, 112 athletes will take to the ice at the Gangneung Curling Centre where they will compete in a mixed team and a mixed doubles event.

Which countries have qualified for curling at Gangwon 2024?

Just as at PyeongChang 2018, the Gangneung Curling Centre will host curling at Gangwon 2024.

In all, there will be two competitions at the Games: a mixed team championship and a mixed doubles event.

Unlike in previous editions of the Winter Youth Olympic Games, the mixed doubles event will feature one female and one male from the same National Olympic Committee.

The 16 nations contesting the mixed team event are:

  • Hosts: Republic of Korea
  • Africa: Nigeria
  • Americas: Brazil, Canada, United States
  • Asia: People's Republic of China, Japan
  • Europe: Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye
  • Oceania: New Zealand

The 24 nations contesting the mixed doubles are:

  • Hosts: Republic of Korea
  • Africa: Nigeria
  • Americas: Brazil, Canada, United States
  • Asia: People's Republic of China, Japan, Kazakhstan
  • Europe: Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, Ukraine
  • Oceania: New Zealand
  • West Asia Region: Qatar

Curling at Gangwon 2024: Teams to watch

With Rasmus Wranaa, Amos Mosaner and Stefania Constantini among the Youth Olympic alumni who have gone on to win Olympic gold, the stars of the future could well be in the mix at Gangwon 2024.

Curling powerhouse Canada will be hoping their cohort including, Chloe Fediuk, Owain Fisher, Nathan Gray, Allie Iskiw, Simon Perry and Cailey Locke, can regain the mixed team title which Norway won at Lausanne 2020.

Denmark's brother-and-sister act Jacob and Katrine Schmidt will have a unique bond and an Olympic pedigree to draw on when they slide down the ice. The pairs' parents are two-time Olympic curler Ulrik Schmidt and former European champion Lisa Richardson.

Sure to be a big hit at the Gangneung Curling Centre are Team Nigeria who became the first African curling team to qualify for a Youth Olympic Games.
