Coronavirus updates: sports events affected by the pandemic

Get updates and a full list of sporting events hit by COVID-19, and the big events coming up set to go ahead

As the world attempts to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus, many sports events in 2020 have been postponed or cancelled.

On Tuesday 24 March it was announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games would be held next year before the summer of 2021.

International Federations will now hold discussions over what changes will need to be made to qualification and the events relating to it.

As for this year, World Championships and continental tournaments in several Olympic sports have had to be moved with the NBA, NHL, and major football competitions, including the UEFA Champions League and Euro 2020, also affected.

In general, sports calendars around the world have been constantly changing.

Here's a full sport-by-sport list that we will continue to update as news comes through:

Summer sports

Aquatics - Artistic swimming, Diving, Swimming, and Water polo

Football

UEFA announced on March 17 that Euro 2020 will be postponed to 2021

CONMEBOL also postponed Copa América 2020, Argentina and Colombia, originally set for 12 June–12 July.

La Liga: With news that the Real Madrid football team went into quarantine on March 12, officials suspended all fixtures in Spain's top two divisions for two weeks on the same day.

Champions League and Europa League have been postponed.

Major League Soccer has suspended its season until further notice.

A four-team international event in Doha featuring Croatia, Portugal, Belgium and Switzerland from March 26-30 has been cancelled.

FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation postponed all Asian World Cup qualifying matches in March and June.

New seasons in the Chinese, Japanese and South Korean professional leagues have been postponed.

Brazil’s opening two qualifying games for the 2022 World Cup — against Bolivia (27 March) and Peru (31 March) — have been postponed.

Asian Champions League: Start of knockout rounds moved to September.

Golf

The Women's World Championship in Singapore from 27 February - 1 March has been cancelled.

The LPGA Tour has postponed or cancelled all tournaments scheduled until mid-June.

The Masters at Augusta, scheduled for 9-12 April, has been moved to 12-15 November.

The US PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park, scheduled for 14-17 May, has been moved to 6-9 August.

The US Open at Winged Foot, scheduled for 18-21 June, has been moved to 17-20 September.

The Open Championship at Royal St George's, scheduled for 16-19 July, has been cancelled.

The PGA Tour has cancelled all tournaments until mid-June including the WGC Matchplay, resuming with the Charles Schwaub Challenge from 11-14 June.

The European Tour Championship has postponed all scheduled tournaments up until late June.

The Asian Tour has postponed all scheduled tournaments until the Maekyung Open in Korea scheduled for 3-6 May.

The Ladies European Tour has postponed all scheduled tournaments until June.

Asian 49erFX Championship in Hainan, China from March 20-29 moved to Genoa, Italy, from 12-19 April .

Other key events

Various continental championships will act as Olympic qualifiers from February through April.

Additionally, for Oceanian sailors, individual World Championships in the various classes held in February will serve as qualifying events.

Shooting

World Cup in New Delhi from 15-26 March postponed to 5-12 May and 2-9 June.

Olympic test event in Tokyo from 16-26 April cancelled.

Other key events scheduled

Most places at the Olympic Games have already been filled, although there is one final European Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in Plzen, Czech Republic, from 18–25 May 2020.

One spot in each individual event will be allocated to an NOC through the ISSF's World Olympic Rankings. Ranking cutoff date: 31 May 2020

Skateboarding** (Park and Street)**

The first two dates on the Street League Skateboarding calendar have been cancelled in Las Vegas and Beijing.

The situation "is being monitored" by World skate ahead of the Worlds in London and Nanjing in May.

IFSC African Championships in Cape Town (RSA) and the IFSC Oceania Championships in Sydney (AUS), due to take place in March; postponed.

World Cup in Wujiang, China from 18-19 April cancelled.

World Cup in Chongqing, China on 22 April cancelled.

Surfing

The WSL (World Surf League) cancelled all events in March on Thursday 12 March "due to the rapidly evolving situation with COVID-19.

On March 16 the WSL announced that all pro surfing events were cancelled until the end of May.

ITF:

All ITF tournaments have been suspended until 8 June.

Davis Cup:

China forfeited World Group I playoff vs. Romania in Piatra Neamt on 6-7 March.

Japan vs. Ecuador qualifier in Miki on 6-7 March, no spectators.

Italy vs. South Korea in Cagliari on 6-7 March, no spectators.

ITF Fed Cup:

Finals in Budapest, Hungary from 14-19 April (with France, Australia, United States, Czech Republic, Russia, Belarus, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Slovakia, Switzerland) postponed.
