Conseslus Kipruto has defended his steeplechase Diamond Trophy, despite finishing the final without a left shoe!

The Rio 2016 gold medallist was mid-race in Zurich when his running spike went tumbling out of the pack into lane two.

As a veteran middle-distance runner, Kipruto naturally continued as if nothing had happened.

With 200m left in the the final race of the Diamond League year, and the Letzigrund Stadium crowd in raptures, the Kenyan made his move on the final bend.

Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali took the opportunity to speed around the reigning champion’s outside, into what looked like a victory sprint.

But there was one final twist.

Kipruto threw all of his remaining energy, into one final lop-sided 50m surge, narrowly edging El Bakkali on the line to claim the race and season honours.
