Jack Laugher and Anthony Harding put on a dominant display to claim a Commonwealth Games gold in the men's 3m synchronised springboard diving final in Birmingham on Friday.

The English duo, who recently won silver in the event at FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, were unmatched in their quest for the Commonwealth title finishing with a total of 438.33, 61.56 points ahead of silver medallists Gabriel Gilbert Daim and Muhammad Syafiq Bin Puteh of Malaysia.

Three-time Olympic medallist Laugher with new partner Harding led the pack after the required dives (101.40) but really came alive when the optional dives began.

Their lowest rated degree of difficulty dive, a forward two and a half somersaults two twists, ranked 3.4, equalled the highest degree of difficulty dive chosen by the rest of field demonstrating the confidence in which the Englishmen approached the competition.

"I think what me and Tony (Harding) wanted to take from this was that we wanted to get another good performance under our belt," Laugher told the BBC after the event.

"To go out there and perform some of the hardest dives in the world alongside a great synchro partner was obviously pretty good."

The final dive, a forward two and a half somersaults three twists, ranked an eye-watering 3.9, was their lowest score (80.73) but thanks to its difficulty and the gap that had built across all six dives Laugher and Harding were a shoo-in for the gold.

The win marks a second gold in two days for Laugher who successfully defended his 1m springboard title yesterday.

It was a surprise silver for Malaysia's Daim and Puteh.

The team from Asia submitted two pairs into the five-team contest with Daim and Puteh the less experienced combination but after a devastating error by their compatriot Yiwei Chew on his fifth dive, the younger team seized the opportunity to jump into the medal zone.

Australia, also arriving to the competition with a new pairing in Samuel Fricker and Shixin Li, similarly capitalised sliding into the bronze medal position after Team Scotland struggled with the pressure on their final dive.
