World champion Nikhat Zareen and former world No. 1 Amit Panghal will be among the prime contenders for gold medals when Indian boxers enter the ring for the Commonwealth Games 2022 boxing finals at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre on Sunday.

India, who won nine medals, including three golds, in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast 2018, will have four Indians punching for gold at the CWG 2022 boxing finals.

Apart from Nikhat Zareen and Amit Panghal, two-time world youth champion Nitu Ghanghas and men’s 92+kg super heavyweight boxer Sagar Ahlawat made it to their respective finals.

Nikhat Zareen will fight Northern Ireland’s Carly McNaul, a silver medallist from Gold Coast 2018, for the gold medal. The CWG debutant, competing in the women’s 50kg light flyweight category, has recorded convincing wins in all of her matches en route to the final.

Amit Panghal, who will be keen to shrug off the Tokyo 2020 disappointment, will take on Kiaran McDonald of England in his second-consecutive Commonwealth Games final. Amit Panghal was a silver medallist at Gold Coast in 2018.

Nitu Ghangas, competing in the 48kg minimumweight category, also delivered the winning punches in the absence of legendary Mary Kom and made it to the far end of the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Nitu Ghangas, 21, will fight home favourite Demie-Jade Resztan, a world championships bronze medallist, for the gold.

Sagar Ahlawat will clash with England’s Delicious Orie, a European Championships bronze winner, for his first CWG medal.
