WATCH: Big wave surfing world record attempt in Nazaré

Olympic Channel returned to the home of huge swell in Portugal to film big wave surfing prodigy Tony Laureano take on what could be a world record wave.

Nazaré is a seaside town on Portugal’s Costa de Prata that is famous for producing some of the world’s biggest waves.

Like bees to a honeypot, that means the world’s top big-wave surfers can often be found in the water trying to ride the white horses

After learning that one of the largest swells ever was rolling into Nazaré's shores on October 29th 2020, Olympic Channel travelled to the area with the goal of filming big wave surfing prodigy Antonio ‘Tony’ Laureano break the world record for the largest wave ever surfed.

Given that big wave surfing is a high-risk sport, his father joined on a jet-ski to ensure his son's safety.

A host of star names in the surfing community such as Garret McNamara, Andrew Cotton, Nic Von Rup, and Justine Dupont also came out to test themselves on the waves.

Below is a clip from Olympic Channel's new one-off film ‘Nazaré 2020. The Beast Awakens’, which will be released in full on next week. Warning: It's not for the faint-hearted!

‘Tony’ Laureano: Big wave surfing's next big thing

Laureans grew up in Praia Grande, Portugal, and is considered to be one of the most exciting young prospects in the big wave surfing community.

In 2017, at just 15 years of age, he became the youngest surfer ever to be nominated for the XXL Big Wave Awards, in The Biggest Wave category.

His ability, determination and fearless attitude have seen him marked by international surf experts as someone that could go on to dominate the Big Wave Tour.

Shredding Monsters - Nazaré

Olympic Channel is no stranger to Nazaré and its giant waves.

In 2017, we followed a group of big wave surfing legends including Garret McNamara as they embarked on a trip to take on the biggest swell of the year in ‘Shredding Monsters - Nazaré’.

You can relive that epic trip below.
