Georgia's 3x3 team moves on to the quarterfinals

On Tuesday, October 9 the public was waiting to watch a basketball 3x3 match that was scheduled to start at 9:00 in Urban Park, but the Georgian men’s team did not arrive and Slovenia won by default. But on Saturday, October 13 they won twice and advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will play against Argentina.

“We arrived late from the Olympic Village because we thought the game was at 9:30. When we realised what had happened it was a really bad moment and we felt horrible,” said team member Luka Maziashvili.

After the disappointment, their reaction was immediate. The Georgians recovered with a convincing 21-4 victory against Jordan in the second game on Tuesday to keep themselves afloat in Group A. On Saturday, they beat Turkmenistan 20-9 and finished with a 15-10 triumph against China.

“I’m proud of my teammates, we did a great job and beat a difficult rival," said the team's top scorer Otar Pertaia. "If we continue this way we can make it far in the Games. The problem we had with the first game motivated us even more. There was nothing else we could do but win.”

Slovenia finished undefeated (4-0) in Group A while Georgia took second place (3-1), leaving China (2-2) out of the medal quest. The first two teams secured their spots in the quarterfinals. The Georgians will play Argentina (Group C winner) on Tuesday.

The Argentine women’s team also made it through to the quarterfinals after leading Group C with two solid victories: 20-15 against Mexico (7 points from Sofia Acevedo) and 21-5 against Andorra (9 points from Victoria Gauna). They will compete against China on Tuesday, October 16 in the hope of making it to the semifinals. But, unlike Georgia, they have never mixed up the time and have always arrived early.
