The world number one has withdrawn from the competition in Jakarta, saying he's "not fit to play" after suffering an ankle injury

Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen has announced he won't take part in the Indonesia Open 2024 due to injury.

The Dane, who will aim to defend his Olympic men’s singles title in Paris this summer, injured his right ankle in the Singapore Open and withdrew from the semi-final last week. That was despite playing through the injury to win his quarter-final match against Leong Jun Hao of Malaysia.

Axelsen announced on X (formerly known as Twitter), “I’ve been trying all I can to get ready for [the] Indonesia Open, but unfortunately I’m not fit to play…I promise to be back soon again”.

The two-time world champion could win a third consecutive medal at the Paris Games, having won bronze in his Olympic debut in Rio 2016 before going on to take gold at Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

The Olympic men’s singles competition at Porte de La Chapelle Arena gets underway on 27th July.
