Austria’s triplet sisters top artistic swimming duet podium as nine nations book their places for Tokyo 2020

Austria, Belarus, France, Netherlands, the United States, Israel, Great Britain, Liechtenstein, and Colombia punched their tickets for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the artistic swimming duet event.

Austria’s triplet sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini Alexandri topped the podium in the artistic swimming duet event at the FINA qualification tournament in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday. 

The Austrian duo was head and shoulders above the competition, earning the top scores in both the technical and free events winning the gold medal with 182.8053. 

Highlighting their dominance, Anna-Maria and Eirini was the only duet to score above 90 points in both the technical and free events. They scored 91.2668 for their free routine themed “Evil Dolls” and 90.5721 for their technical routine “Warriors”. 

The nine nations will join Russia, China, Japan, Ukraine, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Egypt, South Africa and Australia, which have already qualified for the Olympic Games, where 22 pairs will be competing.

Twinning when you are swimming

Two more sets of twins were among the nine nations to punch their tickets for Tokyo, with France’s Laura and Charlotte Tremble and the Dutch pair of Bregje and Noortje de Brouwer finishing among the top artistic swimmers in the competition. 

The Tremble twins finished in third place with a total score of 176.4601, with Belarusians Vasilina Khandoshka and Daria Kulagina claiming the silver medal ahead of them with a total of 176.6593.

The De Brouwer sisters finished in fourth place with a score of 176.0288 to earn their places which will be the first time since Beijing 2008 that the Netherlands will have artistic swimmers at the Games. Twins Bianca and Sonja van der Velden were the last Dutch representatives at the showpiece. 

Lara Mechnig and Marluce Schierscher made history on Sunday, becoming the first artistic swimmers to represent Liechtenstein at the Olympic Games. They finished in a creditable eighth place with a score of 167.6689.
