Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden will lock horns with the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the Australian Open 2024 tennis men’s doubles final at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday.
The Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden vs Simone Bolelli-Andrea Vavassori Australian Open men’s doubles final is scheduled to start at 3:15 PM Indian Standard Time on January 27. Watch the match on live streaming and telecast in India.
This will be a second successive Grand Slam final for Bopanna and Ebden, having made the final of the US Open last year.
At AO 2024, the second seeds overcame two Australian wildcard pairs in their opening two rounds and defeated the 14th seeds Wesley Koolhof-Nikola Mektic in the third round. Bopanna and Ebden saw off Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, the sixth seeds, in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Zhang Zhizhen and Tomas Machac in a three-set thriller for a place in the final.
Meanwhile, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, unseeded, defeated Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer in the semi-final on Thursday. Their biggest win at the Australian Open 2024 came against Germany’s eighth-seeded pair of Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz in the quarter-finals.
The 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna is set to become the oldest No. 1 player in men’s doubles history next week and could also become the oldest tennis player to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era if he lifts the trophy on Saturday. Bopanna is already the oldest tennis player to reach a Grand Slam final, breaking his own record from the US Open last year.
This will be the first men’s doubles final for Rohan Bopanna at the Australian Open and third in Grand Slams. He had reached the men’s doubles final of the 2010 US Open with Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and the 2023 US Open with Ebden but lost on both occasions.
The Indian tennis player, whose only Grand Slam title came at the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles, has featured in the Australian Open final in 2018 and 2023 but in mixed doubles.
