Two-time Olympic medallist Alexander Hill headlines the 37-member Australian rowing team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, announced by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) on Sunday.
Hill, who won the silver medal at Rio 2016 before clinching the gold medal in men’s coxless four at Tokyo 2020, is among six Aussie rowers who will be taking part in their third Summer Games.
Hill’s Tokyo 2020 gold medal-winning team-mates Alexander Purnell, Spencer Turrin and Jack Hargreaves have also made the cut.
The 37-member rowing squad features 14 men and 23 women.
Headlining the women’s division are Annabelle McIntyre, Jessica Morrison and Lucy Stephan who won the gold medal in women’s coxless four at Tokyo 2020 along with Rosemary Popa, who isn’t included in the Paris team.
Purnell, Spencer and Turrin will row in the men’s eight competition while women’s four Olympic champions McIntyre and Morrison will crew the women’s pair event in Paris. Stephan also moves from the four to the women’s eight.
Harriet Hudson, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist in quadruple sculls, will return for her second Games, this time in the double sculls.
“It's an honour to be able to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, and to do it a second time is incredible. I'll definitely draw on my experience from my previous Games, but the thing about the Olympics is you want to approach it just like any other regatta,” Hudson said.
Australia’s rowing team for Paris 2024 also includes 11 Olympic debutants like 25-year-old Lily Triggs, who will compete in the women’s four, just a year after making her first senior national team. Patrick Holt will make his Olympic debut in the men’s pair.
The Australian rowing team, currently training at their European Training Centre base near Varese, Italy, will enter Paris on a strong note after finishing on top of the medal tally at Rowing World Cup III in Poland earlier this month, where they claimed 11 medals in 13 events, including six gold.
The rowing events at Paris 2024 will be held at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium from July 27 to August 3.
