Paris 2024 Olympics: Shane Rose, Edwina Tops-Alexander headline nine-member Australian equestrian team - full list
Three-time Olympic medallist Shane Rose will headline a nine-member Australian equestrian team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced on Thursday.
The 51-year-old Rose will make his fourth appearance at the Summer Games and lead Australia’s charge in eventing along with Kevin McNab and Chris Burton.
Rose has won a team medal at all three of his previous Olympic appearances with a silver at Beijing 2008, a bronze at Rio 2016 and a silver at Tokyo 2020.
Rose and McNab were part of the eventing team three years ago that won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Andrew Hoy, who completed the three-member team at Tokyo, has been replaced by Chris Burton, who was part of the eventing team that won bronze at Rio 2016.
Hoy is one of Australia’s most decorated Olympians with a national record of eight appearances at the Games, three Olympic gold medals, two silvers and a bronze. However, the 65-year-old Australian athlete was not selected for the Paris Olympics.
Edwina Tops-Alexander is set to make her fifth appearance at the Games and will spearhead the jumping team, which includes debutants Hilary Scott and Thaisa Erwin. Australia will compete with an all-female jumping team at the Olympics for the first time.
Edwina Tops-Alexander, who made her Olympic debut at Beijing 2008, will also become Australia’s first five-time Olympian showjumper at Paris 2024.
In dressage, Australia will be represented by Simone Pearce, Jayden Brown and Will Matthew. Pearce returns for her second Summer Games while Brown and Matthew will make their Olympic debuts.
Equestrian was first included in the Olympics at Paris 1900 but Australia first competed in the sport at Melbourne 1956.
Australia also boast a proud history in equestrian with 14 Olympic medals (six gold, four silver, and four bronze) won so far.
The equestrian dressage, eventing and jumping competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be held at the Château de Versailles venue in Île-de-France.
The eventing competition will held from July 27 to 29, dressage from July 30 to August 4 and jumping from August 1 to 6.
