The Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 will be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from April 11 to 16.

A total of 30 Indian wrestlers, 10 each for women’s, men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman categories, will compete at the continental championships.

The Bishkek meet will also see Indian wrestlers competing under their country's name and flag.

Since last year’s World Championships, Indian grapplers have been competing under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag after the world wrestling governing body suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The ban was lifted last month.

Most of the top Indian wrestlers are skipping this year’s Asian Wrestling Championships due to the Asian Olympic Wrestling Qualifiers being held at the same venue from April 19. Consequently, a young Indian wrestling squad will be in action at the Asian Championships.

India, so far, have secured only one Paris 2024 Olympic quota in wrestling. Antim Panghal obtained it after winning the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg at the 2023 World Championships.

With the quota in the women’s 53kg secured, Antim Panghal was initially expected to feature at the Asian Championships but later withdrew to focus on preparations for the Paris Summer Games.

The 25-year-old Anju, who won the bronze medal at the 2021 U23 World Championships, has replaced Antim in the Indian squad. Anju won the 53kg selection trials last month and defeated two-time World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat in the semi-finals.

World championships bronze medallist Sarita Mor, Antim Kundu, who won silver at the U20 World Championships in Amman last year, and Abhimanyu, an U23 world championships bronze-medal winner, will spearhead the Indian wrestling squad at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 in Bishkek.

At the last edition of the continental championships held in Amman, Indian wrestlers clinched 14 medals - one gold, three silvers and 10 bronze. Aman Sehrawat, in the men’s 57kg, accounted for the only top podium finish.
